Jerpoint Abbey
Image 101
Photographer’s note:
Jerpoint, located in County Kilkenny, is a beautifully
preserved Cistercian monastery. It is unusual in that, unlike the
typically austere and undecorated stonework in most Cistercian complexes,
it has a number of interesting (and sometimes comical) carved figures
in the colonnade. One of these can be seen in this photo.
Photographed: August 1999.

Rock of Cashel
Image 102
There are many interesting photo opportunities available at the Rock
of Cashel in County Tipperary. This photograph is of one of the many
Celtic crosses on the grounds with the beautifully preserved round
tower as a dramatic backdrop.
Photographed: May 1998.

Glendalough
Image 103
This photo of the upper lake at St. Kevin’s Glendalough, gives a
wonderful example of why ‘bad’ weather in Ireland can often bring
out a soft beauty in the landscape. The misty hills add an air of
mystery to the scene that caught my eye.

Inisheer
Image 202
Photographer’s note:
The Aran Islands are among my favorite places in Ireland. This is
a picture of the ruins of the O'Brien Castle on the smallest of the
Arans, Inisheer (Inis Oírr).
Photographed: May 1998.

Connemara
Image 203
Photographer’s note:
This peaceful photograph of fishermen on a lake in Connemara, with
the mists on the high hills and bright sunlight on the lower hillside
always brings to my mind the wonderful variability of the Irish weather
which makes photographing Ireland such a magical experience.
Photographed: August 1999.

Dunguaire Castle
Image 301
Photographer’s note:
This photograph was a case of being in the right place at the right
time. The light from the window cast on the table and candle were
too good to pass up when I saw them while walking through Dunguaire
(County Galway) with friends on my first trip to Ireland.
Photographed: May 1998.

One of the prettiest spots in Connemara. The beautiful sky helped
to make this photograph special.
Photographed: August 1999.
|
Cliffs of Moher
Image 402
Photographer’s note:
Few sights in Ireland are as impressive as the Cliffs of Moher in
County Clare. This photograph was taken on a day when the cliffs themselves
were in fairly clear light, but the mist over the sea makes the horizon
disappear in the distance.
Photographed: May 1998.

Jerpoint Abbey
Image 403
Photographer’s note:
The verticality of the ruined church windows at Jerpoint Abbey in
County Kilkenny, combined with the brilliant sky from this wonderful
summer morning, helped to make this scene memorable.
Photographed: August 1999.

Inisheer
Image 501
Photographer’s note:
The ruin of this small house on Inisheer (Inis Oírr), the smallest
of the Aran Islands, is evocative a time (fortunately) now long in
Ireland’s past. During and after the Great Famine (An Gorta Mór) many
such Irish homes were abandoned as the population was significantly
reduced due to starvation, disease and emigration.
Photographed: May 1998.

The textures of this detail study of a dry stone wall on Inisheer
